about Ken

Hello I am Coach Ken, Welcome to Becoming Uzima.
Before moving forward let me explain to you what Uzima means, because it will pop up a few times. “Uzima,” in my native language Swahili means ‘Full of Life’. I am a Kenyan American who was born in Kenya, at the age of 10 I moved to Southern California. My mission is to help you become full of life by using fitness as a vehicle for life transformation. We call this process Becoming Uzima.

I have been in the Fitness Industry since 2010, but my journey really started when I enrolled in a trade school in 2012. It was a program dedicated to just fitness trainers, it was 6 hours and 5 days weekly of schooling on anatomy, nutrition, business and hands on practice on how to train clients. One of my favorite memories of school was when our teacher divided our class in two groups had has debate against fitness and health beliefs whether or not you agreed with side assigned you had to use the knowledge taught to defend the assigned side (a true hands on experience) this helped because in the fitness industry there are soo many beliefs that all work. This 9 month program offered the exact school that was best for me, its almost catered for just me. I graduated with 3 offers to work for high end gyms in Southern California and my career started. I was only employed for 1.5 half years before realizing that big box gyms put profit before client results. Their commitment was never on client results, because of my frustration 2014 my business Uzima Fitness Training was born, where I was dedicated to helping clients build strength, become faster and achieve their “fitness goals”. Thats was what 3 of my NASM certification were on being a Fitness Trainer. Without the pressure of the big gym sales quotas, I started focusing on clients and on their needs and what they really wanted. I quickly realized that clients, even though they enjoyed the workout high after a workout and getting faster and stronger. What 90% of my clients cared for wasn’t doing the exercise right part as much as they cared about loosing weight. I knew from school and the debates we had that nutrition was 100% of weight loss. I got another certification on nutrition and became a weight loss trainer. Now clients weren’t only getting the workout high, they were getting faster, stronger and seeing weight loss. This was exciting after a few years of being a weight loss trainer, I notice a lot of clients were constantly coming back or 75%-85% of client would never reach the 100% goal(Example if the clients goal was to loose 50lbs they would stop anywhere between 25-40lbs loss but never accomplished the whole 50lbs, this was frustrating because I knew there was soo much knowledge and mindset change in finishing the journey, simply the last part of the jounery was the most important.

About the programs

Becoming Uzima

After talking to a few trainer and past teachers, I quickly realized this was also their reality too and was widely accepted reality in the industry. This was not okay with me at all. After further research I found a very few percentage of coaches, trainer and organization who did not believe in this either. I struck conversation with them, attended their events and hired coaches to help me understand and conquer this issue. After over $100K investment, Becoming Uzima was born.

A Transformation program. The mission; to help you become full of life by using fitness as a vehicle to transform your life. Where 100% of your results are reached.

Transformation: a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance.

After being a:
Fitness Trainer- Using Fitness to help clients become stronger faster and healthier
Weight loss Trainer- using a combination of Fitness and Nutrition to help clients achieve fat loss. After trying both I quickly realized I was partially training my clients, I dedicated and invested to becoming a
Transformation Coach- Using Fitness, Nutrition and Behavioral Phycology not only to achieve fatloss or body transformation but shed your old self and step into who you are made to be. Building not just physical strength, focusing on emotional and mental strength. When those 3 things are being worked on simultaneously magic happens some call it a spiritual effect and especially in fitness because I believe fitness is the best vehicle to initiate achieving a full life, because fitness is a very personal journey. It’s you versus you! There is no boss or employees, it’s just you and yourself on this path. It’s your creation, even in the midst of a busy life, it’s a choice to choose you above all else. Also the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle will literally benefit every other aspect of your life.
Here are some examples of the magic:

30-year-old female-“Thank you so much Coach Ken, I now have my dream job”
23-year-old male -“Coach, I won’t lie, I am now confident in who I am”
A client’s wife in her 50’s-“Ever since you have been training my husband, I have been getting some 😉 ”
40-year-old dad- “I have so much energy now to keep up with my kids!”
30-year-old single woman- “ I can get out there and date now, because I am happy with who I am”
31-year old male- “ I am getting married and its all because of you. I would be honored to have I you to officiate my wedding”
Our style of coaching is unique and it leads clients to create lives they couldn’t even dream of before. The idea is to build confidence, brick by brick and layer by layer. This is no fake it till you make it mentality. There is hard work and building upon each step in the process. Confidence is built on action, not just a mentality. Even though confidence is what you get at the end of this journey along with the body and life of your dreams.
